Boat accident
More than 150 suspected bandits are believed to have drowned following a tragic boat accident in Sabon Gida, a community in Sokoto State.
According to local accounts, the incident happened on Saturday evening when a boat reportedly carrying a large group of armed men overturned while attempting to cross a waterway in the area.
Sources familiar with the situation according to a report from a security expert, ZagaZola Makama, said the vessel was heavily loaded and it suddenly capsized, throwing all those onboard into the water.
“Preliminary information suggests that many of them could not swim, leading to heavy casualties,” a source disclosed.
Early reports indicated that none of the occupants may have survived, although security agencies are yet to issue an official statement confirming the number of casualties or details surrounding the incident.
If verified to be true, the development could significantly weaken the operational capacity of armed groups active in parts of Nigeria’s North-West region, where banditry has remained a persistent security challenge.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates as investigations continue.
