Former PDP National Secretary, Sen. Samuel Anyanwu
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart Samuel Anyanwu has dismissed the party’s recent convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, describing the entire exercise as a “jamboree” and insisting it lacked legitimacy.
Speaking in an exclusive chat with Channels Television—just hours after the PDP announced his suspension alongside several other party figures—Anyanwu argued that the gathering fell short of the party’s own rules.
According to him, “16 states had not even done their congresses; the entire South-East has not done their congress,” adding that “all that happened yesterday [Saturday] was a jamboree.”
He also claimed that some earlier congresses had yet to be formally communicated to INEC, questioning the credibility of the convention that stretched from Saturday into the early hours of Sunday.
Anyanwu said he found it ironic that party leaders were “celebrating, having their jamboree,” while preaching adherence to internal rules. “When I heard somebody yesterday at the convention… saying that we must obey the rules of the party, I laughed,” he remarked.
The two-day convention saw the PDP expel several high-profile members, including FCT Minister Nyesom Wike; former Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose; and Anyanwu himself, who had served as national secretary. They were accused of engaging in activities deemed harmful to the party’s interests.
Party structures in Imo, Abia, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers states were also dissolved.
The motion to expel 11 prominent members was moved by Bode George and swiftly seconded by the Bauchi State PDP chairman. Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed put the decision to a vote, and delegates adopted it unanimously.
The controversial convention proceeded despite a tangle of conflicting court orders—one allowing the event and another seeking to halt it.
