Incessant strikes responsible for academic setback in varsities – ARNU

The Chairman, Association of Registrars of Nigerian Universities (ARNU) Dr. Abubakar Mamuda, has said the frequent industrial action by four unions in the university systems is a major set back for tertiary institutions in the country.

Dr. Mamuda stated this at the 17th retreat and 72 business meeting of ARNU held on Thursday, at Assembly Hall of Nasarawa State University Keffi.

He noted that ARNU annual retreat and business meeting is an event organized to bring together all registrars of various universities in Nigeria on a platform to promote ethical and best practice and to enhance educational system in Nigeria.

He said the theme for the retreat, ” Administering Nigeria Universities of the Future, Expectations and Draw Back”, was carefully chosen base on the current realities of issues confronting Nigeria universities .

He stressed that, the traditional objectives of university system such as teaching , research and community service, are giving way to the new research and innovations, which is moving from industrial revolution to technology revolution and presently the social revolution.

In his opening remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Nasarawa State University Keffi, Prof. Suleiman Bala Muhammed, said the the consistent strike in the university education in Nigeria has drawback the educational quality that affect development in the system.

“You will agree with me that strike action is certainly one of the drawbacks in our collective efforts to improving the university system” he said.

Prof. Bala-Muhammed added that, since he took the mantle of leadership as the Vice Chancellor of NSUK in 2019, he has presented five years action plan, to be achieve within his five years.

He reiterated that, his stewardship have recorded tremendous growth, especially in academic programme development, whistle browsing policy, examination and promotion interview for senior noon teaching staff, staff development , library and ICT development, infrastructures , research , staff and students welfare among others.

The VC stressed that he is committed to principle leadership, which is base on honesty, integrity, merit, and devoid of primordial sentiments, solidarity cooperation and unity of purpose, sustain fight against unethical conducts in research , publication, teaching, examination and facts of University life.

Presenting his welcome speech, Registrar, Nasarawa State University Bala Ahmed II who double as the host, expressed a profound gratitude to God for the wonderful opportunity ARNU has given to NSUK for hosting the annual retreat.

Bala Ahmed, further stated that nearly 100 registrars attended the retreat across Nigeria universities.

In a goodwill message, HRH the Emir of Keffi, and pro-chancellor of NSUK Dr. Shehu Chindo Yamusa III, appealed to universities registrars to see their position as service but not for frustrating their subordinates.

He said, registrars should develop themselves to be effective and maintain the bureaucrat tradition of personnel functions.
