Insecurity: Cross River NUJ partners police in combating crime

The Nigerian Union of Journalist (NUJ) has pledged to sustain continuous partnership with the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) in combating crime in the society through objective reportage of police activities as well as public sensitisation on security measures.

The NUJ Chairman of Cross River State Council, Comrade Nsa Gill, stated this on Monday when he led the newly elected leadership of the union and other members on a courtesy visit to the Commissioner of Police, CP Aminu Alhassan in his office at Diamond Hill, Calabar.

Comrade Gill noted that the visit was to formally introduce the new executive to the police boss and emphasized that for a crime-free society, all hands must be on deck.

He therefore pledged the union’s commitment to continue to work with the police to ensure that the society is safe for all to live in peace and harmony.

The NUJ Chairman appealed for more robust relationship that will bring mutual benefits for both bodies especially now that social media platform is causing a lot of concentration for the media space.

“We have come here today to familiarise ourselves with you and to reiterate our continuous support in assisting in the fight against crimes, by ensuring that objectivity is maintained in our reportage. We appeal for a more robust relationship that will bring mutual benefits”. He said.

He added that union will commence a lot of workshops and seminars on responsible journalism to address such.

Comrade Gill, who used the occasion to inform the police commissioner of the NUJ Press Club which will soon take off, also urged him to get ready for his investiture as patron of the press club.

In his remarks, CP Al Hassan commended the chairman and members of the union for the visit, adding that the press is a vital organ for successful crime fighting.

The police commissioner noted that he has so fast enjoyed a smooth working relationship with the media, expressing the belief that the new leadership will sustain same.

He promised to work hand in hand with the media to ensure that crime is brought to a minimum level and to give the necessary support to journalists in course of their constitutional duties.

CP Al Hassan also called for the creation of police media forum where there can be periodic interface between the media and the police, pledging total cooperation with the NUJ.
