PATRICK ABANG Calabar –
The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Cross River State Chapter has called for collective efforts in ensuring that gender equality is achieved in the country despite challenges faced in the quest for their voices to be heard.
The NAWOJ State Chairperson, Comrade Umo Basi-Edet made the call on Tuesday in a statement signed by its Secretary, Comrade Maria Nsa Ewa, on the occasion of the 2022 International Women’s Day celebration held in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.
With the theme ,”Attaining Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow”, the president said NAWOJ frowned at the recent rejection of the five Gender bills that would have liberated women in Nigeria.
She called on the lawmakers in the National Assembly to reconsider and pass the Gender Bills into law to enable the true principle of democracy to be achieved in the country.
Comrade Basi-Edet noted that all hands must be on deck to stop every form of segregation, discrimination and stereotype against women, as well as put an end to biases bordering on gender discrimination.
The NAWOJ President, further, advised women to always love, support and encourage themselves, adding that they have the right to achieve their dreams and attain greater heights in their various fields without any limitations.
To back words with action, NAWOJ Cross River carried out an advocacy march to the Cross State House of Assembly to drive home the demands of the women.
