President Bola Tinubu and Kano Governor Abba Yusuf
Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, on Monday held a closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja, a development that has intensified political speculation in the state.
The governor according to Channels TV and, was seen arriving at the President’s office around 4:13 p.m., sparking renewed debate over his political future.
The visit comes against the backdrop of growing reports suggesting Yusuf may be considering a defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Kano’s political atmosphere has since become charged, as the rumoured move is said to be facing strong resistance from NNPP leaders and loyalists of the Kwankwasiyya movement led by Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.
Reacting to the unfolding situation, the NNPP, both at state and national levels, issued a statement in December 2025 distancing itself from any plan to join the APC. Kano State Chairman of the party, Hon. Hashim Suleiman Dungurawa, said:
“We are aware of the developments happening here in Kano State concerning some individuals who intend to defect to the APC.”
He added, “I want to make it clear that the Kano State party, the national party, and our national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, together with other leaders, do not approve of what is happening.”
Dungurawa further revealed that efforts were made to prevail on those involved to remain within the party for the sake of Kano residents. “We did everything within our power to persuade them to be patient and not defect to the APC, because of our responsibility to them and our responsibility to the people of Kano,” he stated.
Kwankwaso himself later issued a stern warning to members contemplating defection, insisting that betrayal never pays in politics. “I want to remind those who left us that nobody has betrayed us and succeeded,” he said in a viral video. “Political history is very clear on this matter… What matters most is the support of the masses, not the movement of a few politicians who are chasing personal interests,” he added, stressing that the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya Movement remain firmly rooted among the people of Kano State.
