Kashimawo play in honour of late MKO Abiola
DOSF-UK, a prominent theatre company, is set to premiere ‘Kashimawo,’ a historical drama celebrating Nigerian history, for European and diaspora audiences.
Director of DOSF-UK, Chantal Edgar, announced in a Wednesday statement from Lagos that the play draws inspiration from the life of the late Nigerian businessman and politician Moshood Abiola, widely known as MKO.
“Kashimawo is the second in a series of historical expositions designed to bring these stories to Europe and the diaspora,” Edgar said, emphasizing the production’s aim to honor Abiola’s enduring political legacy.
She described the play as a vivid portrayal of Abiola’s journey, weaving together his personal struggles and larger-than-life presence.
“‘Kashimawo’ captures the wild pull of MKO’s life, from his roots as a ‘poor orphan’ to the complex interplay of fate, as if the gods themselves played a mischievous game with his destiny,” Edgar added.
Supported by Kola Abiola, son of the late icon, the production is led by actress and producer Tayo Elesin under Elesin Productions. Directed by Professor Rasaki Ojo Bakare, the play features veteran actor Biodun Abbey as Kashimawo, joined by an international cast.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), ‘Kashimawo’ will make its international debut in London on October 4 and 5, following its initial run in Lagos on March 31 and April 1, 2024, produced by the Duke of Shomolu Foundation and also directed by Professor Bakare.
