Kwara Assembly confirms state electoral commission chairman, members

Kwara State House of Assembly on Thursday confirmed the appointments of nominees for positions of chairman and members of Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWSIEC).

The appointments of the nominees were considered by the committee chaired by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Engineer Yakubu Salihu, after thorough screening on the floor of the House.

The nominees confirmed by the House included – Muhammad Baba Okanla Ilorin West as Chairman while Fredrick Sabi Abel Baruten, Engineer Hassan Taiye Salami Oyun, Gbedeyan Gbadura Yomi Ekiti Ndama Al-Hassan Edu, Saka Baliqees Kehinde Ilorin South, Engineer Abdullahi Janet Amdat Ilorin East are to serve as members of Commission.

Responding to questions, Chairman of the commission, Mr Muhammad Baba-Okanla, promised to be impartial in the conduct of Local Government polls in the state.

Mr. Baba Okanla reaffirmed the constitutional expectation of the electoral umpire of providing level plain field for participating political parties before, during, and after Local Government elections 

Also, speaking, a member of the Commission, Engineer Hassan Taiye-Salami, charged the political class to always imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship to ensure hitchfree polls 

Engineer Salami assured lawmakers of interfacing with credible Civil Society Organizations and other relevant stakeholders to engender transparent electoral process.

 The KWASIEC Chairman and Members were thoroughly questioned based on numerous the challenges affecting free and fair elections in the country.

Speaker, Rt. Hon. Engr Yakubu Salihu therefore directed Clerk of the House, Hajia Halimah Kperogi to communicate the Resolution on the confirmation of the appointments to the Governor.
