A devastating accident occurred on Friday night when a tipper truck, reportedly suffering from brake failure, crashed into bystanders along Chisco Park Junction in Amichi, Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State, leaving many feared dead.
The incident was confirmed on Saturday by Mrs. Margaret Onabe, spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra, in a statement to journalists.
Onabe stated that the FRSC is actively collecting details about the crash and promised to provide further updates once comprehensive information is available.
Eyewitnesses reported that the tragic event unfolded around 9:30 p.m., when the truck driver, struggling to control the vehicle due to brake failure, veered into pedestrians along the roadside, resulting in numerous casualties.
According to a witness, the accident happened swiftly, catching victims—many of whom were engaged in their nightly businesses—off guard.
“The tipper came out of nowhere, and the driver couldn’t stop it. It plowed into people at Chisco Park Junction, causing chaos,” the witness recounted.
Among the victims were motorcyclists, a young girl, bystanders, and petty traders, some of whom were left lifeless on the scene.
The witness further noted that several passengers waiting to board vehicles were also struck by the out-of-control truck.
The incident was substantiated by Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) footage that recorded the horrific crash, capturing the moment the tipper collided with the unsuspecting crowd.
