The Senator representing Plateau North Senatorial District, Distinguished Senator (Prince) Pam Mwadkon Dachungyang, JP, has raised alarm over the worsening security situation in parts of Plateau State, warning that persistent attacks pose serious threats to lives, peace and economic activities in the state.
The lawmaker spoke on Thursday while addressing journalists at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Plateau Council in Jos, where he described insecurity as the most pressing challenge confronting Plateau North and the country at large, calling for urgent and coordinated national action to address the situation.
Dachungyang said his decision to brief the media followed his personal assessment of affected communities as well as consultations with traditional institutions and other key stakeholders across the senatorial district.
In his words, “The biggest challenge facing us as a people in Jos North is insecurity. The security situation in Nigeria today is something else, and it has been a major area of concern for me. I have been consulting widely with traditional institutions and other key stakeholders to find a permanent solution to this issue.
“It was quite disturbing and disheartening when I visited some of the places that has these incidents of the attacks. I could not sleep because what I saw was unbelievable and horrible. The sight was terrible. I took a bold step and reported the matter to the National Assembly. It was in this wise, coupled with similar cases coming from different parts of the country, that a National Security Summit was created.”
The Senator disclosed that the report he submitted to the National Assembly underscored the scale of the attacks, noting that the situation required attention beyond local and state-level responses.
He explained that similar reports from other parts of the country informed the decision to initiate a National Security Summit, which he said would provide a platform for critical stakeholders to collectively address Nigeria’s security challenges.
“To this end, I am using this opportunity to warn, tell and urge whosoever that is part of these negative vices, including their supporters, to think twice and stop these dastardly acts immediately. Those engaging in these heinous acts and still live in Plateau North Senatorial District of Plateau State should find another place to stay,” the Senator warned.
Dachungyang said his limited public comments on security issues in the past were deliberate, explaining that security matters are often better handled discreetly to achieve lasting results.
He linked the lingering insecurity in Plateau State to the decline in tourism and other economic activities, stressing that peace remains the foundation for development and investment.
As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tourism, the lawmaker said efforts were underway to reopen and revive tourist destinations across the state, adding that Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang was fully committed to restoring Plateau’s image as a safe and attractive destination.
The Senator also called on residents to support security agencies with timely and credible information, assuring his constituents of continued legislative and policy interventions aimed at restoring peace and safeguarding lives and property across Plateau North.
