Force Commander of the ECOWAS Stabilisation Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau (ESSMGB), Brigadier General Danjuma Ribah Dantani, has charged Nigerian troops serving in the mission to remain disciplined, professional and focused on their mandate, warning against conduct capable of undermining the mission or tarnishing Nigeria’s image.
Dantani gave the charge on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, during his maiden operational visit to the camp of Nigerian Company 5 (NIGCOY 5) in Bissau, where he addressed officers and soldiers on the expectations placed on them as members of the ECOWAS stabilisation mission.
The Force Commander singled out loyalty and discipline as values the troops must uphold, urging them to remain law-abiding, obey lawful instructions and conduct themselves in a manner befitting Nigerian soldiers serving outside the country.
He also directed the personnel to strictly observe the mission’s social media policy, stay away from drug-related offences and maintain proper hygiene within the camp.
Beyond discipline, Dantani urged the troops to keep themselves physically and mentally ready for the demands of the mission through regular exercise and adherence to established channels of communication.
He warned that any action capable of jeopardising the mission or bringing the Nigerian contingent into disrepute would not only affect the personnel involved but could also cast a shadow over Nigeria’s contribution to the regional stabilisation effort.
The visit came less than three weeks after NIGCOY 5 arrived in the mission area on July 31, 2026, as part of Nigeria’s contribution to the ECOWAS Stabilisation Support Mission.
Earlier, the Commanding Officer of NIGCOY 5, Lieutenant Colonel Afam Junior Chidi, briefed the Force Commander on the company’s operational activities and assured him that the contingent had continued to carry out its assigned responsibilities in line with directives from Force Headquarters.
Chidi thanked Dantani for the visit and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to its duties and the overall objectives of the mission.
The Force Commander’s visit also provided an opportunity for direct interaction with the Nigerian contingent as the mission continues its stabilisation role in Guinea-Bissau, where the conduct, readiness and professionalism of deployed troops remain critical to maintaining confidence in the regional operation.
The visit featured an address to the troops, inspection of camp facilities, signing of the visitors’ book, presentation of a memento and a group photograph.
