Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo and the new Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Yekini Oisayemoje Idaiye
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has charged the newly inaugurated leadership of the Edo State House of Assembly to provide transparent, inclusive and selfless leadership, stressing that public office is a trust that must be exercised in the interest of the people.
The governor gave the charge on Monday when he received the new leadership of the Assembly at Government House, Benin City, shortly after the emergence of Rt. Hon. Yekini Oisayemoje Idaiye as the new Speaker.
Addressing the lawmakers, Okpebholo urged the Assembly leadership to place unity and teamwork above personal interests in order to sustain peace and effective lawmaking in the state.
He said: “Today, I received the new leadership of the Edo State House of Assembly, led by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Yekini Oisayemoje Idaiye, and charged them to lead with humility, transparency, unity and teamwork.
“I reminded them that political office is temporary and that our responsibility is to serve the people. I urged the new leadership to carry every member along, embrace dialogue and resolve differences internally, while working together to maintain a peaceful and effective Assembly.
“Teamwork is the bedrock of effective leadership. Together, we must continue to put Edo first and deliver good governance to our people.”
The governor’s remarks came against the backdrop of a major leadership change in the Edo State House of Assembly.
Earlier on Monday, lawmakers elected Idaiye, who represents Akoko Edo II Constituency, as the new Speaker following the resignation of Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku.
The Assembly also suspended Agbebaku alongside the Majority Leader, while Hon. Sunny Ojiezele, representing Esan South East Constituency, was announced as the new Majority Leader.
The latest developments mark a significant reshuffle in the leadership of the Assembly as the lawmakers begin a new phase under Speaker Idaiye.
