Many trapped as 7-storey building collapses at Banana Island in Lagos

Many workers have been trapped after a seven-storey building under construction collapsed at First Avenue, Banana Island, Ikoyi, Lagos State.

The Lagos Territorial Coordinator National Emergency Management Agency, (NEMA), Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed the incident to newsmen on Wednesday in Lagos.

Mr. Farinloye said the unfortunate incident happened while workers at the site were involved in some casting work. 

He said all the emergency agencies have been deployed to the scene of the incident to rescue the victims.

Meanwhile, The Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development has confirmed the collapse of an “unapproved” seven-storey building under construction.

A statement by the ministry’s Deputy Director, Public Affairs, Mukaila Sanusi, said the victims of the building collapse who sustained injuries are receiving immediate medical attention.

“While we are able to confirm at this time, that there is no fatality.

“The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Engr. Tayo Bamgbose-Martins was at site of the incident to assess the situation and flag off an immediate investigation into the cause of the building collapse. 

“We ask members of the public to remain calm and expect further information from the Ministry”, the statement said.
