Federal Government has officially called off the ceremonial parade previously scheduled to commemorate Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary on October 1st.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by Mr. Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), in Abuja.
While the parade — a longstanding tradition marking Nigeria’s independence — has been shelved, Imohiosen assured the public that the decision in no way diminishes the significance of the day or the government’s commitment to national unity.
> “The cancellation of the parade does not in any way reduce the importance of the anniversary,” he said. “The Federal Government remains fully committed to celebrating Nigeria’s 65th Independence with dignity and enthusiasm.”
Though the exact reason for the parade’s cancellation wasn’t disclosed, Imohiosen noted that all other activities planned for the anniversary will continue as scheduled.
> “The government regrets any inconvenience this decision may cause and deeply appreciates the understanding and continued support of Nigerians, the diplomatic community, and invited guests,” he added.
As the country marks 65 years of independence, the statement also encouraged citizens to rally behind ongoing national reforms under President Bola Tinubu.
> “Nigerians are urged to continue supporting the reforms of the President toward building a greater, more united, and prosperous nation,” Imohiosen said.
Even without the usual march pasts and ceremonial displays, the spirit of October 1 remains strong — reminding citizens that nation-building isn’t about parades, but about purpose.
