Nigeria’s Super Eagles took a crucial step towards qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Lesotho on Thursday, keeping their hopes alive in the North American-bound tournament campaign.
Head coach Eric Chelle named a formidable starting XI, welcoming back Galatasaray star striker Victor Osimhen and Al-Kholood’s commanding centre-back William Troost-Ekong.
The Super Eagles looked threatening early on, with Moses Simon attempting to cut in from the right in just the 6th minute, but Lesotho’s solid defensive shape held firm.
Despite controlling possession for much of the match, Nigeria struggled with fluidity in the final third, often let down by errant passes. Lesotho’s well-organised back five frustrated the home side, limiting clear chances in the opening half.
Osimhen nearly broke the deadlock in the 38th minute after racing past his marker to meet a cross, only to be denied by a sharp save from goalkeeper Moerane Sekhoane. With the Crocodiles holding firm, the first half ended without goals.
The breakthrough came shortly after the restart. In the 53rd minute, Nigeria were awarded a penalty after Motlomelo Mkwanazi was penalised for a handball while blocking Simon’s shot. Troost-Ekong calmly slotted the spot-kick into the bottom corner, putting the Eagles ahead.
Momentum remained with Nigeria, and they doubled their lead in the 80th minute. Osimhen turned provider, laying the ball off to Akor Adams on the right edge of the box. Adams took a smart touch before rifling a low strike beyond Sekhoane.
Lesotho, however, found a late lifeline. A lapse in concentration from Nigeria’s defence during a corner allowed Hlompho Kalake to pounce and fire a shot past Stanlee Nwabali, setting up a nervy finish.
Despite the late scare, the Super Eagles held on to secure three valuable points as the road to the 2026 World Cup continues.
