Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather advisory predicting thunderstorms, moderate to light rains, and potential flash floods across Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday, urging residents to prepare for adverse conditions.
According to the weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet expects Monday morning to bring thunderstorms with moderate rainfall to parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina in the northern region.
“By the afternoon or evening, thunderstorms and moderate rains will likely spread across the entire northern region,” NiMet stated, warning of a significant flood risk in Adamawa, Taraba, and Bauchi states during this period.
In the central region, light rains are forecast for Benue, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, Kogi, and Nasarawa during Monday morning. “Later in the day, expect light rains in Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Plateau, Niger, Benue, and the FCT,” the agency added.
For the southern region, cloudy skies with light rain are anticipated in Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Anambra, Abia, Ogun, Edo, Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa during the morning, extending to Osun, Oyo, Ondo, and Ekiti by evening. NiMet highlighted a high flood risk in Oyo, Ogun, Edo, and Delta states.
On Tuesday, the northern region will see morning thunderstorms with moderate rains in Taraba, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Kaduna, and Zamfara, with similar conditions expected region-wide later. In the central region, intermittent light rains are forecast for the FCT, Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Plateau, and Benue. The southern region will experience cloudy skies with intermittent light rains in Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Anambra, Ondo, Ekiti, Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Lagos, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom. “Flood risks remain high in Anambra, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom,” NiMet cautioned.
For Wednesday, NiMet predicts morning thunderstorms with moderate rains in Taraba and Kaduna in the northern region, with isolated thunderstorms and moderate rains in Borno, Bauchi, Taraba, Kaduna, Gombe, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, and Adamawa later. In the central region, light rains are expected in Nasarawa, Niger, and the FCT in the morning, with intermittent light rains in the FCT, Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Plateau, and Benue by afternoon or evening.
The southern region will see cloudy skies with intermittent light rains in Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, Lagos, Edo, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, and Cross River in the morning, spreading across the region later. NiMet noted a high flood risk in Bayelsa.
NiMet advised the public to exercise caution, stating, “Avoid driving in heavy rain, and states at risk of flash floods should activate emergency response systems immediately.”
The agency also recommended securing loose objects, disconnecting electrical appliances, and avoiding tall trees to prevent accidents.
“Airline operators should obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective operational planning,” it added. Residents are encouraged to stay updated via NiMet’s website, www.nimet.gov.ng.
