Apex Igede socio-cultural organisation, Omi Igede, has condemned, in strong terms, the killings and destruction of property in Obi Local Government Area of Benue State by suspected herdsmen on May 31.
President-General of the organisation, Comrade Ben Okpa, in a statement made available to NATIONAL ACCORD on Wednesday, , described the killings as barbaric, inexcusable, unacceptable and urged the State and Federal Governments to arrest the situation and bring the perpetrators to book.
In the statement, signed by the Public Relations Officer of the organisation, Mr. John Okpong, the President-General decried last Sunday’s bloodbath in Itakpa area of Obi, during which over 16 innocent villagers were dead, many people displaced and several injured.
The incident occurred when the suspected herdsmen stormed the home of a former Federal Permanent Secretary, Chief Emmanuel Ogbile and the home of Deputy Chief Whip of the Benue State House of Assembly in the 9th Assembly, Hon. Peter Onche, destroying property and also carting away livestock.
Comrade Okpa who lamented that the situation was getting out of hand, implored government to do everything possible to forestall further attacks and restore normalcy to the area.
He also appealed to the international community not to remain silent.
