Police arrests four suspected herdsmen for allegedly killing two irrigation farmers in Bauchi

ARMSTRONG ALLAHMAGANI, Bauchi –

Bauchi State Police Command said it has arrested four armed suspected herdsmen for allegedly attacking and killing two irrigation farmers who were working on their farms.

The incident was said to have happened at Tabak Village of Mainako Ward in Zaki LGA of Bauchi on 21st December, 2020 and also injured many other people.

The Bauchi State Police Command confirmed the incident and the arrest of the four suspects through its Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Wakil, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, and said that it received the report of the incident from the Zaki Police Division.

“The offence was committed on the 21st of December when the suspects invaded the farm killing two farmers in the process. Our personnel responded promptly and arrested some suspects who were from the neighbouring Jigawa state.

“One Ruwa Umaru, 25 years old and others from Jigawa state were arrested in connection with the crime.

“They have been charged to court while efforts are being intensified to get more of the suspects who are still at large, Wakil stated.”

He assured that personnel from the State Command are presently in Jigawa State working with the Command there to track down the fleeing suspects.

Meanwhile, the member representing Katagum Constituency in the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Suleiman Muktar, under matters of urgent public importance during plenary, drew the attention of the House on the attack by the herders.

According to the Lawmaker, the herdsmen stormed the farms of the villagers, attacked the farmers and killed two of them.

He explained that the people of his Constituency relied heavily on farming for a living and these attacks by herdsmen are creating fear and making their farms insecured.

He therefore urged the House to call on the State government to take measures to secure the area and bring the criminals to book.

The Speaker, Abubakar Suleiman, who, in a response, said that the incident was worrisome because it affects people and their sources of living, adding that this can happen anywhere. 

According to the Speaker action must be taken immediately in order to curtail the situation and bring the perpetrators to justice a development the House adopted in the prayers contained in the motion.
