An Education Specialist, Smith Bam has identified poor compensation for teachers as one of greatest challenges of low student enrollment in tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
Bam identified the challenges in a paper on Friday in Abuja at a workshop organiser by Teachers Registration Council with the theme, “A Practical Approach to Teacher Education: Challenges of low student enrollment in tertiary institutions in Nigeria” for Education Correspondents’ Association of Nigeria (ECAN).
According to him, teachers in the country are in pitiable condition and as far as the students do not look at them as role models, the enrollment will continue to remain low.
He therefore called on governments to elevate teachers salary at per with Doctors and other well paid workers.
“Until government elevate compensation for teachers, the effort of TRCN to raise the standard of teachers in the country will be in vain”.
Earlier in a keynote address by Registrar of TRCN, Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, he charged ECAN to play a role towards changing the narrative of teachers in the country.
He warned that any attempt to remove TRCN for being and agency of government would be the end of education in Nigeria even as some of the staff are ready to leave.
The Education Correspondents’ Association of Nigeria (ECAN), has been assured of continuous partnership to ensure a robust Education sector in Nigeria.
The Registrar who was represented at the occasion by the Director, Regulation Accreditation and Enforcement, Bimbo Okunola further stated that, the TRCN appreciated the contribution of ECAN in reshaping its activities through reportage.
