A total of 250 elderly persons from Nasarawa State, have received support from the N50 million Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS), launched by First Lady Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, on Tuesday.
Represented by Mrs. Shela Tosan-Akabe, wife of the Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, Senator Remi Tinubu announced each beneficiary would got N200,000 to enhance their lives in old age.
She emphasized the gesture stems from a commitment to the elderly’s well-being, part of a nationwide scheme targeting citizens aged 65+, including veterans from the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPIWA).
The initiative, replicated across all 36 states and the FCT, totals N1.9 billion. “This aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope agenda—promoting inclusive growth, ensuring no Nigerian is left behind,” she said.
Highlighting past support for over 100,000 women traders and PWDs, Tinubu urged the elderly to find joy in community, compassion, and care. “They’ve paved the way for us, it’s our duty to make life worthwhile for them now. Old age is about love, support, and respect, not just longevity,” she added.
On her part, Hajiya Sulifat Sule, wife of Governor Abdullahi Sule, thanked the First Lady for her care, noting the beneficiaries were carefully selected from Nasarawa’s 13 LGAs.
Represented by Dr Sa’adatu Yahaya, Secretary Nasarawa State Scholarship Board, she urged them to use the funds wisely for their well-being and families, “not for anything that brings harm.”
