Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara
Two members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have appealed to their colleagues to show restraint and halt the planned impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Nma Odu.
The lawmakers, the House Majority Leader, Sylvanus Nwankwo, and the member representing Degema Constituency, Peter Abbey, made the appeal on Monday during a joint media briefing in Port Harcourt.
Addressing the press, Nwankwo called on members of the Assembly to temper justice with mercy, noting that several interventions had been made by leaders, residents and constituents across the state.
He urged that the impeachment process be suspended to allow room for dialogue and reconciliation.
“We unanimously issued the notice, but following interventions, we appeal for leniency and dialogue to resolve differences and halt impeachment,” he said.
Abbey also pleaded for peace, urging lawmakers to discontinue the impeachment process, even as he acknowledged that there were constitutional infractions on the part of the governor and his deputy.
According to him, patience and understanding would better serve the interests of governance and stability in the state.
“Leniency would strengthen prospects for amicable governance and give them opportunity to adhere strictly to the rule of law,” Abbey said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that both Nwankwo and Abbey were among the 26 lawmakers who had earlier unanimously endorsed the impeachment notice against Governor Fubara and his deputy.
