Senators urge FG to take over burial arrangements of Joseph Wayas

Worried that the remains of the former Senate President, Joseph Wayas has been abandoned in a London Hospital 16 months after his demised, the Federal Government has been urged to urgently take over the burial arrangements before the end of April this year.

Moving a motion of urgent Important before the floor of the National Assembly, lawmakers from Cross River State, noted that the delay in the burial of the former Senate President is a national embarrassment to the nation.

Senator Gershom Bassey representing Cross River South, Senator Sandy Onor representing Cross River Central and Senator Jaregbe Agom of Cross River North, appealed to the Federal Government as a matter of necessity to take over the burial arrangements.

The late former Senate President, Joseph Wayas, who was born on 21st May, 1941 and died on 30th November, 2021 was Nigeria’s Senate President during Nigeria’s Second Republic ( 1 979 — 1983)

Until his death, he was a strong believer in true Federalism as the only solution to Nigeria’s democratic problems;

He was also a member of the 1994/1995 National Constitutional Conference and founding member of the All People’s Party (APP).

Wayas brought a high degree of knowledge, style, pomp and grandeur to the leadership of the Second Republic Senate;

The senators are concerned that this delay is an embarrassment to the National Assembly that he headed between 1979 — 1983 and the Federal Republic of Nigeria;

They augured that further delay in the burial of Nigeria’s 2nd Republic Senate President will put the Senate in bad light;

Accordingly, they resolved to call on the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency take up the burial plans of Sen. Joseph Wayas and see to his burial before the end of April, 2023.
