Spotlight Initiative trains media practitioners on ethical reportage of GBV in Sokoto

The European Union (EU) and The United Nations (UN) funded Spotlight Initiative has organized a 4 day training for media practitioners in Sokoto on ethical reporting and advocacy towards eliminating violence against women and girls in the state.

In his welcome address, Sokoto State Chief of Field Office, UNICEF, Muhammad Fall said he is particularly excited about the meeting because of the caliber of participants that are present in the workshop

“You are the guarantor of the moral and ethical values of the society. We are in a situation were the rate of violence against women and children, majorly, girls is increasing”.

“Therefore, the fight against violence against the most vulnerable group requires quality response from all”.

While stressing that, the EU/UN Spotlight Initiative is pleased to work with everybody towards supporting a situation where women and girls are free from all harmful practices, the UNICEF Sokoto Chief Of Field Office, said, “UN wish to see a world were women and girls are free of harmful practice”

Highlighting the training objectives, Khadijahh Ibrahim said UNICEF is concerned about working towards strenghtening an enabling legal and policy framework, ensure effective, strengthened and coordinated institutions, mobilize community, empower and encourage effective media engagement.

She also added that the 4 day training would help increase knowlegde on ethical reporting, engage in gender inequality discourse and the role the media should play as champions of changing nagative social norms

“The engagement will also help to increase the participation of SI media network members in advocacy and solution journalisms”

In his part, Sokoto UNICEF Child Protection Specialists, Mr Pius Uwamanua said children need a protective and nurturing enviroment to survive, develop and thrive.

Talking on how vulnerable children are, Mr Pius said, they are physically week, mentally immature, and economically dependence hence the need to show them adequate care.
