Scene of the collapsed school building
There was widespread panic on Monday afternoon in the Aguda area of Ogba in Lagos after a four-storey building housing a nursery and secondary school suddenly collapsed.
The incident occurred around noon while students and teachers were reportedly inside the building, sparking fear among residents and passersby in the neighbourhood.
An eyewitness said the structure began showing signs of distress moments before it gave way, prompting those inside the premises to rush out for safety.
According to the witness, pieces of stone began falling from the building while visible cracks appeared on the walls, creating alarm among the occupants.
The witness explained that the unusual signs triggered panic, leading students and staff to quickly evacuate the structure.
Moments after the building was vacated, the entire structure reportedly collapsed.
Fortunately, no lives were lost in the incident as students and teachers managed to escape before the building came down.
The collapse drew a large crowd to the scene as residents and commuters gathered to witness the aftermath of the incident, while concerns were raised about the safety of buildings used for schools in the area.
Authorities are expected to investigate the cause of the collapse.
