By DOMINIC AKPENSUEN, Jalingo –

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Taraba State University chapter has commenced an indefinite strike, citing six key conditions that must be met before they resume classes.

According to a press statement by the chapter’s chairperson, Dr. Garba Mbave Joshua, the strike is necessary due to the delay in settling accumulated salary arrears, non-payment of salary backlogs.

Other pressing issues according to the ASUU Chairman are the lack of functional pension scheme since the establishment of the institution, which has jeopardize the future and job security of academic staff; the failure to constitute governing council; non payment of earned academic allowances, as well as perpetual exclusion from the recent implementation of 70.000 minimum wage.

Other conditions include, the inadequate funding of the university as enshrined by the law establishing the university that five percent of the monthly state statutory allocation will be given to the institution, five percent from the local governments and 2.5 percent contract awarded by the state and local government among others.

Dr. Joshua disclosed that efforts to engage the government in resolving these issues have been unsuccessful.

He appealed to stakeholders and civil society organizations to pressure the government to resolve the issues and safeguard the university’s reputation for excellence.
