A devastating incident has occurred in Kano State, where two men, Usman Muhammed and Ibrahim Inuwa, both 40 years old, lost their lives while trying to retrieve a cell phone from a pit latrine in Bazabe village, Albasu Local Government Area.
The Public Relations Officer of Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, who disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, said the duo succumbed to suffocation in the latrine.
“We received an emergency call at Takai fire station from one inspector Auwalu at about 11:16 a.m that two men were trapped in a pit latrine.
“We immediately sent out a team to the scene to rescue the victims,” Abdullahi said.
“Muhammed was trying to retrieve his handset that fell into the pit toilet, when he got trapped.
Thereafter, the second victim, Inuwa, tied a rope around him, entered the pit latrine with the intention to help him out and also got trapped,” Abdullahi explained.
Despite rescue efforts, both men were pronounced dead at a hospital after being rescued unconscious.
“Both men were rescued unconscious and conveyed to a hospital where doctors on duty confirmed them dead,” Abdullahi added.
The incident has been reported to the Divisional Police Office in Albasu, and the authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
