The appointment of two village heads has sparked violence conflicts in Iko Esai community, Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State, resulting in loss of lives and property.
The conflict has been linked to a long-standing dispute between the youth leadership and the Clan Head, Chief Obio Arong Owai, which dates back to 2022.
Speaking to newsmen over the weekend, the former Personal Assistant to the Deputy Leader of Akamkpa Local Government Council, Patrick Aidam, said Chief Owai has been detained and awaits trial for crimes he allegedly did not commit.
Aidam claims that the Clan Head’s sister and daughter were brutally murdered, and his houses and cars were burnt down.
According to him, the crisis has left many dead, wounded, homeless, and without means of livelihood. Over 50 houses have been burnt, and the community is crying out for help. However, the masterminds behind the violence are said to have powerful backers, making it difficult for authorities to intervene.
A lawmaker and former Commissioner of Agriculture, Hon. Okon Owuna, initiated peace moves in the community and has brought the matter to the Cross River State House of Assembly for urgent attention.
Reacting to alleged complicity of the Chairman of Akamkpa LGA, Chief Press Secretary to the lawmaker, Daniel Agbor, said Mr. Felix Akposi’s efforts rather than being appreciated , have become a convenient scapegoat for those who thrive in the theater of conflict and disorder.
“Let me state unequivocally that Hon. Felis Akposi has remain unwavering in his commitment to upholding peace and stability in Ikot Esai community
“Moreover, the allegations that the chairman is complicit in the purported removal of the Clan Head of Ikot Esai community is nothing short of a figment of Mr Aidam’s imagination.
“Chieftaincy matters are governed by established statutory and traditional procedures , and no point has the Local Government Council usurped it’s role in the adjudication of such affairs”.
