Super Eagles of Nigeria
As the Super Eagles gear up for a pivotal 2026 World Cup qualifier against Benin Republic, Head Coach Eric Chelle has assured fans that the team will approach the match with total focus and determination.
Addressing journalists during a pre-match press briefing on Monday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Chelle emphasized the high stakes of the encounter and the team’s unwavering mindset.

“We have to win this game tomorrow,” Chelle declared. “I’m fully focused on it. Nothing less than victory will do. Our goal is the World Cup—and that’s what we’re chasing. I’m excited, happy, and yes, maybe a bit nervous—but we’re ready.”
Despite travel hitches en route to Uyo, Chelle noted that the squad remains in high spirits, fully aware of what’s at stake.
Currently, the Super Eagles sit third in Group C with 14 points, behind South Africa (15 points) and table-toppers Benin Republic (17 points). A win tomorrow is critical to keeping Nigeria’s World Cup hopes alive.
Team captain William Troost-Ekong echoed the coach’s sentiments, highlighting the players’ personal drive and collective hunger for success.
“There are guys in this team who want to make a name for themselves—and others who want their names written in gold in Nigerian football history,” Ekong said. “We’re prepared and we’ll go all out for the win.”
However, the captain also acknowledged the unpredictable nature of football. “Tomorrow may not be 100 percent within our control, but we’ll give everything to get the result.”
Meanwhile, Benin Republic’s coach, Gernot Rohr, who once led the Super Eagles, remains confident in his side’s chances. Rohr said his players are motivated and in a strong position to secure the win and edge closer to World Cup qualification.
“The boys are in high spirits. We know what’s at stake and we’re confident we can get the job done,” Rohr said.
With the top spot in the group up for grabs and World Cup qualification hanging in the balance, all eyes will be on Uyo as the Super Eagles face off against the Cheetahs in what promises to be a fiercely contested encounter.
