2023: Seeking elective positions not a do-or-die affair – Sultan tells politicians

…. Don’t just fear EFCC, ICPC, also fear Allah – Bauchi gov tells politicians

ARMSTRONG ALLAHMAHANI, Bauchi –

The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, has warned politicians seeking for elective offices not to perceived the process as a do-or-die affair just as he reminded them that it is only God that gives power.

He stated this at the closing ceremony of the 36th edition of the 2022 National Qur’anic recitation competition hosted by Bauchi State Government in collaboration with Usman Dan Fodio University, Sokoto.

“By 2023, the politicians will be up in their normal game, please, play politics with the fear of the Almighty Allah. Knowing that He is the only one who gives power to whom he wants, at the time he wants and he would take it away from you when he wants”.

“So, do not make it a do-or-die affair because Allah already knows who is going to be a leader come 2023 whether at state or federal level but we don’t know because we are mere mortals. Let’s play the game by the rules. We must be fearful of that day that we will meet our creator,” he stated.

The Sultan who is also the President General, National Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs, warned traders to be fearful of the day of judgement and not increase prices of foodstuff and other commodities and services as the Ramadan approaches.

He then called on the government to devise a way of deliberately reducing the prices of foodstuff to cushion the hardship being faced by Nigerians.

Abubakar said: “Ramadan is coming and the cost of living in this country is going higher. I will like to use this medium to call on all market people who sell things to be fearful of what the Almighty Allah would to do to them when they get to him on the day of judgement. Instead of increasing the prices of foodstuff and other necessary things, please try to reduce them to get the blessings of the Almighty Allah.

“The cost of foodstuff is high and it’s going up and up, governments have to do something to have this very serious challenge tackled.

“I was in Abuja yesterday (Friday) with President Muhammadu Buhari at the commissioning of a Masjid before coming here and the Imam made the same comment. And with the President sitting in the Masjid with us, I think it is left to all of us in authority to see how we can work together and bring this rise in cost of foodstuff to a minimum level and an affordable level were all of us can have a successful Ramadan with ease. I believe it’s not too much to ask our government after all, we elected you into office to serve us and not for us to serve you.”

He noted that the state of affairs is threatening the socioeconomic and the very existence of the world as a planet that is worth living in.

He called on well-meaning and God-fearing Muslims especially the Ulamas to intensify prayers at all times and places especially at gatherings such as these for God to have mercy on the country and save it.

“To also remind ourselves so that we can change our ways. As Muslims, we have been challenged. The banditry, the insecurity is happening within our midsts, we need to ask ourselves ‘why?’ Can we change it? Have we offended Allah? If so, we should have some introspection so that we will be able to go for the expiation of our sins and for Allah to forgive us, so that, at least, we will not be in this kind of mess that we have found ourselves in,” he stated.

Governor Mohammed called on leaders to live with the fear of Allah and by example, warning that, “as politicians, we should not overstretch our discretion, we should not be excessive, we should not be greedy, we should not be selfish and we should know that there is a day for accountability, a day of judgement.”

He added that: “We should not only fear EFCC or ICPC, we should fear Allah and also, our people should know that they should select people that are God-fearing. They should not just only be induced by money over personal interests, over matrimonial or other relationships, they should know that they are electing leaders.
