A Grade A Customary Court sitting at Mapo in Ibadan has remanded 23-year-old Lateef Abdulahi, in a correctional centre for allegedly stealing five pieces of used roofing sheets and escaping from police custody.
Abdulahi had pleaded not guilty to a five-count charge bordering on stealing, escape from lawful custody, and breach of the peace, preferred against him.
The president of the court, Mrs S.M. Akintayo, ordered Abdulahi to be remanded in the Agodi Correctional Facility until he fulfilled his bail requirements.
Akintayo had admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200,000 with two reliable sureties in like sum.
She ordered that each of the sureties should present a valid identity card.
The president of the court adjourned the matter until April 9 for hearing.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp Ayodele Ayeni, told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offences on March 18 at about 1.30 p.m. at Elesinmeta, Mapo-Ojaba area of Ibadan.
Ayeni stated that the defendant was arrested by policemen after breaking into the apartment of one Mr Salisu Yahaya and stealing five pieces of used roofing sheets valued at N25,000.
The prosecutor said that Abdulahi escaped from Mapo police station at about 5.30 p.m. after he was arrested and detained for stealing.
He said that the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 135, 249, 390(9) and 414 of the Criminal code Cap 38 vol. ii, Law of Oyo State, 2000. (NAN)
