Four persons were killed, with over 40 others injured as unknown gunmen attacked Akunza-Ashigye community near Assakio, in Lafia East Development Area, in Lafia LG of Nasarawa State.
Akunza-Ashigye community, located on Lafia – Shendam Federal highway is 50 kilometers away from Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital.
A source, who spoke to our correspondent on phone on condition of anonymity, said the attack took place on Tuesday night around 10 pm.
When asked what could be the immediate or remote causes of the attack, the source said it could be attributed to an outstanding and unresolved crisis that ensued between Fulani herdsman and the community where they killed each others early last year, 2024.
He said the other reason is that last Sunday, as two Fulani herdsmen were returning from cattle market in Lafia, on bike, suspected armed men ambushed and killed one of them on top bridge after Akunza-Ashigye community and the “Fulani man, identified one of their attackers with dreaded hair and he concluded their attackers were from Akunza-Ashigye community, hence the retaliatory attack yesterday night” the source said.
Nasarawa State Command of Police, through its spokesperson, SP Raham Nansel, confirmed the attack to our correspondent via text message, saying “I can confirm that two died; the CP has made massive deployment to the area and investigation has commenced” he said.
