Sokoto CSOs Observatory Forum On ACJL Implementation in a group picture with the management of Sokoto Police Command during the advocacy visit
BY ANKELI EMMANUEL, Sokoto –
The Sokoto State Commissioner, CP Ali Hayatu Kaigama, has reiterated the support of the command in the Administration of Criminal Justice law (ACJL) in the state.
This according to the CP is simply anchored on the fact that the ACJL is built on the ideals of respect for human dignity, not minding who is involved.
The police boss stated this when Sokoto State CSOs Observatory Forum on Implementation of ACJL paid him a courtesy visit at the Command Headquarters.
CP Kaigama added that the state police command is also in support of the speedy and accurate dispensation of justice.
He however gave some of the reasons for delay in the whole process to involve but not limited to investigations, witnesses and even prosecution at the court.
Continuing, the CP said, “Even keeping, feeding and maintaining suspects are things we also frowned at. But sometimes a case will come and the complainant, witnesses and parties in the case will disappear into thin air, hence causing unnecessary and unintended delay”.
To the Sokoto State CSOs Observatory Forum on Implementation of ACJL, the CP said, “I appreciate your coming and initiative as well. We are always willing to support you towards achieving the desired results. We are fighting thesame cause.
“‘We don’t look at you as rivals but friends and partners in progress and in the business of making Nigeria great. However, I am appealing to you CSOs and every other person to always ensure that you confirm facts of matters before speaking out”.
Earlier, the Sokoto State Coordinator of CSOs Observatory Forum on ACJL Implementation, Dr Auwal Ahmed Musa reminded the the Commissioner of Police that the ACJL was signed by the Federal Government of Nigeria in 2015, adding that Sokoto State Government domesticated and signed it in March 2019.
Dr Auwal, however, said the implementation in the state has not been as commendable as expected which was why the CLEEN Foundation with support from Ford Foundation engages Civil Society Organizations’ (CSOs) to advocate for full implantation of the law.
He explained that ACJL is geared towards strengthening institutions, promoting speedy dispensation of justice and ensuring the protection and promotion of the rights of defendants, witnesses and complainants .
“The aim is to allow for respect for all parties involved in the system. This will inturn lead to respect for human dignity and guarantee better society where respect for the rights of all is held in high esteem””. Dr Auwal enthused.
