
Edo State Police Command has made significant progress in the investigation of the kidnapping incident that occurred at the Vegetable Market along Airport Road in Benin City on June 14, 2026.
The breakthrough followed a coordinated operation carried out by operatives of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika.
According to the police, the operation was launched after credible intelligence was received on the activities of the suspected kidnappers.
The Command disclosed that one of the key suspects, Marvelous Isaac, 32, was arrested on June 18 during a gun battle with operatives. Another suspect identified simply as Precious was killed during the exchange of gunfire.
Police said several items were recovered from the suspects, including a red Lexus RX 350 SUV with registration number EKP 848 AE, which investigators said was used in carrying out the kidnapping operation.
Other items recovered were a pump-action shotgun, two live cartridges, a motorcycle and a cash sum of ₦2.05 million.
Further investigations led to more arrests on June 20. The police said Gift Raphael, 27, was arrested and subsequently provided information that led operatives to apprehend Wisdom Michael and Rufus Michael during separate operations in Benin City and parts of Delta State.
According to the Command, the suspects have made confessional statements linking themselves to the Vegetable Market kidnapping and other criminal activities within Edo State.
Commending the operatives for the successful operation, the Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, praised their commitment and professionalism.
He said: “The Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, fdc, commends the operatives for their professionalism, courage, promptness and dedication in tracking down the criminal network. He assures residents of Edo State that the police will not stop untill all criminal elements are brought to justice.”
The police chief also reassured residents of the Command’s determination to tackle crime and improve security across the state.
The Command appealed to members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information that could assist security agencies in fighting crime.
