By CHRISTIANA LOT, Jos –
The recently renovated Naraguta Campus Gate and Rickshaw Terminal at the University of Jos (UNIJOS) have been officially handed over to the institution by the contractor as part of the 2023 Federal Government Appropriation Program.
With the assistance of the Directorate of Physical Facilities, the University of Jos has introduced the revamped Naraguta Campus Main Entrance Gates and the refurbished Naraguta Country Club project.
The redesigned gate features a digital screen, solar lighting, a security post, rickshaw terminals, and landscaping, aiming to reduce congestion at the main entrance and improve the overall campus appearance.
During the handover ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor of UNIJOS, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Rehila Gowon, commended the project.
She stated: “This project has been one of our major topics of discussion in the senate. Our aim was to address the congestion issue at the gate, and our physical facilities team has truly outdone themselves.” She encouraged students and keke drivers to use the new facilities and ensure their proper upkeep.
Speaking on behalf of the Directorate of Physical Facilities, Arch Pam John Bot explained the necessity of redesigning the Naraguta campus main gate.
He said, “The redesign of the Naraguta campus main gate became necessary because the main gate serves both vehicles and pedestrians, causing significant congestion and making it difficult to maintain security.
“The need for a lawn for pedestrians was paramount, and today, the university is pleased to hand over the two newly redesigned gates to the Director of Students Affairs and the Security Department of the University. The digital screen at the university gate will be used to display information about the university and by facilities and departments within the university. Therefore, the use of banners and posters on the university walls will be prohibited.”
Mr. Obinna Ode, representing Dan Global Nig Limited, the construction company responsible for the project, emphasized its broader benefits, saying :
“This project will not only benefit the students but the entire university community, enhancing security at the main entrance.”
Additionally, Dahiru Hassan, Plateau State Chairman of the Tri-Circle Riders Association, expressed gratitude to the university for providing the terminal and pledged to keep the facility clean and secure.
“We are very grateful for this gesture. It’s something we’ve been hoping for, and we thank the university for making it available. We will do our best to maintain and secure it,” he said.
The event also included a tour of the Naraguta Country Club, which now features 10 flat apartments.
