By EZEKIEL OBI, Abuja –
Nigeria’s democracy is a work in progress, according to Chief Reuben Fasoranti, leader of Afenifere, a pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organization.
Fasoranti made this statement in a congratulatory message to mark Democracy Day on June 12, 2025.
He emphasized that Nigeria’s sustained and uninterrupted democratic rule since 1999 is a product of the sacrifices and commitment of heroes and heroines in civil society groups and other well-meaning compatriots.
Fasoranti called on all compatriots, particularly civil society groups, to collaborate with other progressive forces to deepen democratic practice and processes in Nigeria.
He expressed confidence that with the right attitude, visionary leadership, and patriotic citizenry, Nigeria could attain the heights envisioned by its leaders who fought for independence.
Democracy itself remains a work in progress, and entrenching democratic ideals in the country is for the benefit of the present generation and those yet unborn.
The Afenifere leader commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for embarking on significant road projects, such as the Lagos to Calabar Coastal Highway, and institutional reforms like the Students Loan Scheme and local government autonomy.
He also acknowledged the government’s efforts to tackle insecurity, noting that establishing state police and community policing systems could be a panacea for the scourge.
Fasoranti reiterated Afenifere’s strong view that Nigeria must be fully restructured to ensure an enduring framework for unity and progress in the country.
He congratulated Nigerians on this momentous milestone, marking the day democracy and civil rule were reclaimed and restored in Nigeria after a prolonged, destabilizing military rule.
