A devastating accident occurred on the Ijebu-Ode-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, Nigeria, claiming 10 lives and injuring three others.
The incident happened on Friday at approximately 8:30 p.m. near Ome Bridge in the Ijebu North Local Government Area.
According to Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesperson for the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) in Ogun, “Preliminary findings indicate that overspeeding and wrongful overtaking led to the accident.”
Eyewitnesses said the driver wrongly overtook another vehicle at high speed and couldn’t regain control after noticing an oncoming vehicle.
The bus veered off the road, hit an abandoned gravel pile beside the bridge, and plunged into the river.
The Mitsubishi bus, registration number EJ829-LSR, was conveying 15 passengers at the time of the accident.
Unfortunately, 10 passengers lost their lives, including seven males and three females.
Three others sustained injuries, while a toddler and an adult escaped unhurt.
The deceased were taken to Ijebu-Ode General Hospital’s morgue, while the injured received treatment at the same facility.
Akinbiyi urged motorists to avoid speeding and night travel, stressing the importance of road safety at all times.
The TRACE spokesperson emphasized the need for motorists to adhere to traffic rules and avoid reckless behavior on the highways.
