Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly denounced a recent assassination attempt on its Anambra governorship candidate, Chief Jude Ezenwafor, for the November 8 election, calling for the immediate arrest of the perpetrators and their backers.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, the PDP condemned the attack and urged the Inspector General of Police to swiftly apprehend those responsible while enhancing security for Ezenwafor ahead of the election.
According to reports, gunmen ambushed Ezenwafor in Abuja as he returned from an appointment, opening fire on his convoy.
Ologunagba suggested the attack was orchestrated by “certain interests” unsettled by Ezenwafor’s rising popularity.
“This violent act is a desperate move by those threatened by the overwhelming support our candidate enjoys,” he said.
He also revealed that the PDP had uncovered plans by “anti-democratic elements” in Anambra to launch smear campaigns against Ezenwafor following the failed assassination plot.
Describing the incident as a reflection of Nigeria’s growing insecurity, Ologunagba remained defiant.
“Let it be clear to the assailants and their sponsors: their evil plans have failed, and they will continue to fail.
“Chief Ezenwafor is divinely protected and backed by the people of Anambra, who will ensure his victory,” he declared.
He encouraged Ezenwafor to remain undeterred, emphasizing that Anambra remains a PDP stronghold.
“No amount of violence or propaganda will shake the resolve of our party or the people of Anambra to elect a transparent, compassionate, and results-driven government under the PDP,” Ologunagba added.
