Former IGP Mike Okiro
By EZEKIEL OBI, Abuja –
Former Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mike Okiro, has firmly dismissed allegations of attempting to undermine the authority of the current I-G, Kayode Egbetokun.
In a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Supreme Ibitomi, on Saturday in Abuja, Okiro addressed misleading reports circulating in certain media outlets.
“We wish to set the record straight: claims that Okiro is encroaching on the powers of I-G Kayode Egbetokun are baseless and malicious,” Ibitomi stated.
“It is disheartening that some would spread such falsehoods to tarnish the reputation of a dedicated public servant like Okiro.”
The statement clarified that a recent gathering of retired Inspectors-General was convened solely to address concerns over the mandatory retirement of senior police officers.
Okiro emphasized that the forum, where he serves as the elected leader, aimed to assess the rationale behind these retirements, not to interfere with the current police leadership.
“My role is to lead discussions within the forum, not to exert undue influence over the Nigeria Police Force,” Okiro explained.
“Our efforts reflect our commitment to the welfare of police officers and the integrity of the force.”
Praising Egbetokun’s competence, Okiro noted,
“The current I-G is a highly capable and experienced officer who requires no external direction to fulfill his constitutional responsibilities.”
Okiro suggested that the false narrative stemmed from individuals unconcerned with the welfare of retired officers.
He reaffirmed the forum’s dedication to advocating for the rights and dignity of both serving and retired police personnel. “We will not be deterred by malicious propaganda,” he declared.
“These attacks only strengthen our resolve to pursue justice and fairness.”
Urging the public to dismiss the unfounded claims, Okiro called for support in addressing critical issues facing the nation.
“The forum remains committed to advancing the Nigeria Police Force’s growth and promoting the welfare of its officers,” he said.
“We invite all well-meaning Nigerians to join us in championing justice and security across our country.”
