Hungry civilians in war-torn Sudan are reportedly eating animal feed as the situation deteriorates, particularly in El Fasher.
UN officials warned on Thursday that women and girls are facing a “gender emergency” amid alarming food shortages.
Deteriorating Situation in El Fasher
El Fasher is hard hit with hunger growing, and the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warns of a deteriorating situation putting more civilians at risk.
The cost of basic goods in El Fasher is nearly $1,000 per household per month, far beyond most families’ reach.
Food Shortages and High Costs
UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq disclosed that people in El Fasher are resorting to eating animal feed due to spiraling food shortages and prices.
“With increasingly alarming food shortages and spiraling prices, people in El Fasher are reported to be resorting to eating animal feed in what is an increasingly catastrophic situation,” Haq said.
UN Women warned of a “gender emergency” in the crisis.
“This crisis is a gender emergency,” Salvator Nkurunziza, the agency’s representative in Sudan, said.
“Displaced women and girls can be subject to the risks of exploitation and abuse, especially during the delivery of aid.”
