Labour Party has urged the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to reconsider its proposal to raise salaries for political office holders in Nigeria.
In a statement released on Friday in Abuja, the party’s interim National Publicity Secretary, Tony Akeni, described the planned salary hike as “unconscionable,” particularly given the current economic challenges facing the nation.
Akeni labeled the proposal a “misadventure” and called on RMAFC to abandon the plan for the sake of the country’s well-being.
The Labour Party emphasized that, instead of increasing salaries for political leaders, RMAFC should prioritize raising the minimum wage for Nigerian workers, which currently stands at ₦70,000.
Akeni referenced a recent statement from the United States Government advocating for an improved minimum wage in Nigeria, adding, “If a foreign nation can show such concern for our struggling citizens, the chairman and members of RMAFC have no justifiable reason not to act in the greater interest of the people.”
