Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (P-CNGI) has clarified that the Federal Government has not issued any directive or policy to increase Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) pump prices across Nigeria.
In a statement released on Thursday to in Abuja, P-CNGI’s Brands and Corporate Communications Manager, Matilda Johnson, debunked the claims suggesting otherwise.
Johnson emphasized the government’s commitment to keeping CNG affordable, stating, “CNG will always remain significantly cheaper, cleaner, and more affordable than Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and diesel.”
She clarified that recent price adjustments by some operators were independent decisions made by private sector players, not driven by any government policy.
“The P-CNGI wishes to address recent misleading and outright false reports suggesting that the Federal Government has removed subsidies or increased the price of CNG. This is incorrect,” Johnson asserted.
She further noted that while pricing falls under the jurisdiction of relevant regulatory agencies, “no directive or policy has been issued by the Federal Government to alter CNG pump prices.”
The P-CNGI, under President Bola Tinubu’s directive, remains focused on expanding the CNG mobility market to promote a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to traditional fuels.
Johnson highlighted the sector’s growth, stating, “Through the collaboration and commitment of relevant government agencies, the sector has witnessed monumental enthusiasm and growth,” attracting nearly $1 billion in private sector investments.
She added, “Our focus remains on deepening CNG penetration nationwide and encouraging broader private sector participation to ensure availability and affordability for all.”
Reports indicate that some private marketers have raised CNG prices to N380 per Standard Cubic Metre (SCM) from the previous N230, prompting the P-CNGI’s clarification.
