
Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN) has encouraged its members to devise extra means of earning income in order to survive in the face of current economic hardship in the country.
A Communique issued at the end of the association’s 24th Biennial conference and Scientific Meeting held at ‘Yar Adua Centre, Murtala Square, Kaduna from 1st to 3rd September 2025 revealed that the meeting had over 500 registered participants from all the geopolitical zones of Nigeria, including physical and virtual attendees.
The theme of the conference was “Transformative leadership, ethics, and global health in a changing world”.
The communique read by National President of the association Zainab Idris pointed out the objectives of the conference to include; sharing scientific knowledge among members and the general public and also to create a platform for members to network and discuss issues that affect women and childrens’ health.
“Some of the recommendations that emanated from the discussion include that members should be more IT Savvy.
“Members should seek leadership positions wherever they find themselves and make positive changes in the political World. The need to strengthen mentorship in the medical world was emphasised.
“Doctors should develop non-medical skills for survival. Addressing barriers to vaccine uptake to ensure successful roll-out of the measles/rubella and Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine.
“The need for multidisciplinary involvement and capacity-building in the management of Gender Based Violence. The next administration should re-activate a healthy campaign on women’s right to health Information.
“The need to adopt a multi-sectoral approach towards tackling nutritional needs of pregnant women and children.
“The need to leverage technology to improve leadership in health across all ministries. Government ownership of the
Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (MNCH) framework and also male involvement in the Reproductive Health Coalition (RHC) strategies.
“There were over 1200 consultations and over 1300 medications served for acute and chronic ailments. More than 35 obstetric scans were performed, 80 cervical cancer screenings, 327 eye-glasses given, over 200 packs of nutritional supplements provided to children, 30 cataract surgeries and 9 minor surgeries done. 20 patients were referred for further care”. The Communique said.
