Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has defended the borrowing strategy of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, emphasizing its focus on funding essential infrastructure and development projects.
In a statement released on Thursday titled: “ _Peter Obi’s Borrowing Hypocrisy: A Call for Self-Reflection,”_ APC spokesperson Seye Oladejo sharply criticized the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for labeling the Tinubu administration’s borrowing as “reckless.”
Mr. Obi, the former Anambra State governor, had urged accountants to challenge the federal government’s borrowing practices.
In response, Oladejo argued that Obi lacks the expertise to comment on complex issues like finance and economic policy.
“Mr. Obi should stick to his strengths in politics, as matters of finance, economic growth, and social policy consistently expose his limitations,” Oladejo stated.
Oladejo stressed that borrowing under Tinubu’s leadership is deliberate and tied to transformative initiatives.
“Borrowing, when done with purpose and foresight, is not reckless.
“President Tinubu’s administration channels funds into critical areas such as infrastructure, energy, and transportation—sectors vital for sustainable growth,” he said.
He further noted that borrowing to drive development is a standard practice globally, even among the world’s most advanced economies.
The APC spokesperson also questioned Obi’s credibility on fiscal responsibility.
“Peter Obi has no standing to preach about prudent management. As governor, he left Anambra with unpaid pensions, crumbling infrastructure, and dismal human capital development,” Oladejo remarked.
He accused Obi of hypocrisy, pointing to the former governor’s lavish campaign spending, including frequent private jet travel, while advocating for cost-cutting measures.
“The contradiction is stark—Obi’s actions betray his rhetoric on frugality,” he added.
Oladejo praised Tinubu’s bold economic reforms, including subsidy removal, currency adjustments, and strategic borrowing, as tough but necessary steps to secure Nigeria’s economic future.
“Unlike Obi’s rhetoric-heavy approach, President Tinubu is delivering leadership through action, not empty platitudes,” he said. He urged Obi to refrain from commenting on governance and finance, stating, “He is clearly out of his depth.”
In a final jab, Oladejo contrasted Tinubu’s reformist agenda with Obi’s public persona.
“One is building a stronger Nigeria through tangible reforms; the other is chasing headlines with motivational speeches. Nigerians can see the difference,” he concluded.
