
Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested a final-year student and nursing mother accused of leaving her newborn baby girl in a bush in Akwanga, Akwanga Local Government Area.
According to the police spokesperson, SP Ramhan Nansel, the suspect was apprehended and will face prosecution once investigations are complete.
“The mother of the infant has been identified and taken into custody,” Nansel stated.
He said the Commissioner of Police has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Lafia for a comprehensive investigation and subsequent prosecution.”
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) revealed that the suspect is a final-year National Certificate in Education student at the College of Education, Akwanga. She allegedly left the newborn, wrapped in cloth, in a bush near Hope Academy Primary School on AA Koto Street, Akwanga.
A local resident, who chose to remain anonymous, reported that the baby was found alive on Wednesday and the matter was promptly reported to the police for further action.
The incident has triggered widespread outrage in the community, with many residents expressing disbelief and dismay over the alleged abandonment.
