Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi has emphasized Ibadanland’s critical contribution to Nigeria’s socio-economic and political development.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to Oba Rashidi Ladoja, the Olubadan-designate, at his Bodija residence in Ibadan on Sunday, Obi praised the city’s historical and ongoing significance.
“Ibadanland is indispensable to Nigeria’s story,” Obi stated, highlighting its influence on the nation’s progress.
“The socio-economic and political history of Nigeria would be incomplete without acknowledging Ibadan’s pivotal role.”
Accompanied by Labour Party chieftains and prominent Igbo indigenes, Obi commended the hospitality of Ibadan’s people and their contributions both locally and in the diaspora.
Obi expressed confidence in Ladoja’s ability to lead as the 44th Olubadan, citing his extensive experience as a former governor and senator.
“Ibadan is fortunate to have a leader like Oba Ladoja, whose wealth of experience will guide his reign,” he said.
“I am committed to supporting him to ensure his tenure as Olubadan is a success.”
In response, Oba Ladoja described his ascension to the throne as a divine opportunity for service. “Being alive today is a testament to God’s grace,” he said.
“The Olubadan throne is not about wealth or connections—it’s about God’s will. For me, this role is not about glamour but about serving the people and delivering for society.”
Ladoja emphasized that his new position as Olubadan is a continuation of his lifelong commitment to humanity, dismissing misconceptions about the throne’s prestige.
“The era of glamour is past; this is about what you can offer the people,” he added.
