People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to establish a legal framework for the electronic transmission of election results from polling units ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, emphasized that such a system is essential for ensuring credible elections.
“Nigerians want their votes to reflect their true choices,” Ologunagba stated.
“Electronic transmission of results is the only way to minimize manipulation, strengthen democracy, and restore public confidence in our electoral system.”
He stressed the need for INEC to address technical issues with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), which experienced glitches during the 2023 elections.
“If POS machines and ATMs function seamlessly in remote areas, why should BVAS fail where reliable accreditation is critical?” he questioned.
Ologunagba also provided updates on the PDP’s preparations for its elective convention in November in Ibadan, describing it as a pivotal event to unify and strengthen the party.
“All statutory organs, chapters, and stakeholders are aligned for a seamless convention that will position the PDP to reclaim power in 2027,” he said.
He noted that zonal meetings on micro-zoning national positions have concluded, with reports forthcoming, and the sale of forms for national offices is progressing per the party’s approved timetable.
On the appointment of a new INEC Chairman, Ologunagba called on President Bola Tinubu to select an independent figure to ensure fair elections.
“Strong institutions, not individuals, should safeguard our electoral processes,” he asserted. Regarding the anticipated reinstatement of Gov. Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, Ologunagba hailed it as a step toward restoring democratic governance under a capable leader, while maintaining that Fubara’s earlier removal was unconstitutional.
The PDP, according to Ologunagba, remains organized and people-focused, poised to leverage its upcoming convention to build a formidable platform for the 2027 elections. (NAN)
