By PROF LEONARD KARSHIMA SHILGBA –
Today, I join millions of Benue people and well-wishers across Nigeria and beyond in celebrating the 60th birthday of His Excellency, Hyacinth Alia — priest, leader, reformer, and Governor of Benue State.
Life’s journey is often mysterious in its unfolding. For decades, Fr. Alia bore the sacred responsibility of priestly ministry within the Church, shepherding souls, preaching hope, healing the sick, and serving humanity within a defined ecclesiastical community. Yet, by the grace and providence of God, he was called into a larger and more turbulent field of service: the governance of an entire state burdened by insecurity, economic hardship, institutional decline, and deep political fragmentation.
It takes unusual courage for a priestly figure, accustomed to the relative safety of the sanctuary, to step into the figurative shark-infested waters of Nigerian politics. But he did so — not for personal comfort, but in response to what many perceived as a higher call to serve a wounded people yearning for healing, order, and hope.
Since assuming office on May 29, 2023, almost three years ago, Governor Alia has pursued governance with visible determination and focus despite fierce resistance, entrenched interests, orchestrated distractions, and networks of opposition that naturally arise whenever reform confronts established systems.
Indeed, the philosophical meaning of his middle name, IORMEM — “the people have rested” — continues to resonate symbolically with the aspirations of many Benue citizens who desired relief from years of uncertainty and instability.
His administration’s efforts in infrastructure renewal, restoration of public confidence in governance, educational development, agricultural repositioning, and institutional reforms reflect a deliberate attempt to redirect the trajectory of our state toward stability and progress.
At 60, Governor Alia stands at an important intersection of experience, faith, leadership, and legacy. My prayer is that Almighty God will continue to grant him wisdom, strength, discernment, courage, and good health as he bears the enormous responsibility of leading Benue State through difficult but transformative times.
History ultimately judges leaders not merely by the noise surrounding them, but by the enduring impact of their convictions, sacrifices, and service to the people.
Happy 60th Birthday, Your Excellency.
