In response to growing security threats, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Kebbi State branch, has issued a travel advisory to its members, urging them to avoid nine local government areas identified as hotspots for kidnapping.
The directive, issued by Branch Chairman, Alhaji Aminu Hassan, followed an emergency meeting held on Saturday, October 5, to address the recent abduction of lawyer Isyaku Muhammad-Danjuma. The victim was kidnapped last Wednesday along the Ibeto–Birnin Kebbi road in Magama LGA of Niger State.
According to Hassan, the affected areas include Bagudo, Suru, Kamba (in Dandi LGA), Bunza, Kangiwa (in Arewa LGA), Dirin Daji (Sakaba), Ribah, Kanya, and Augie Local Government Areas.
> “Upon the expiration of the boycott period, members are also urged to suspend handling of terrorism-related cases, including those involving kidnapping, abduction, armed robbery or unlawful possession of firearms, until further notice,” Hassan said.
He added that the association condemns the kidnapping in strong terms, describing it as a disturbing reflection of the worsening state of insecurity in the country.
As part of its response, the NBA Kebbi branch announced a boycott of court proceedings from October 7 to 10.
The move is aimed at protesting the abduction and drawing attention to the broader threat facing legal professionals and other citizens.
> “The association is deeply concerned over the rising wave of insecurity across the country,” Hassan noted.
He also revealed that efforts are being made to engage relevant security agencies and government authorities to secure the safe return of the abducted lawyer.
In addition, the NBA said it is collaborating with the judiciary to explore alternative venues for court sittings, especially those that would reduce the need for lawyers to travel to high-risk areas.
Hassan expressed appreciation to members of the Bar, the judiciary, the media, and the general public for their support and solidarity, urging continued unity in the face of national challenges.
> “We call on the government and security agencies to take urgent steps to restore peace and public confidence,” he said.
