As Nigerians prepare to celebrate Christmas across the country, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has moved to reassure citizens of their safety, announcing a nationwide security reinforcement to ensure a peaceful festive season.
The military said additional troops, special forces and air assets have been deployed across strategic locations to deter attacks and swiftly respond to any security threats during the celebrations.
Director of Defence Media Operations, Major-General Michael Onoja, gave the assurance in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, stressing that the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) are working closely with other security agencies to tighten security in vulnerable areas.
According to him, troop movements have been intensified along major routes, while special forces units and air support elements have been placed on high alert to boost rapid response capabilities.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria have emplaced robust and proactive measures aimed at preventing attacks during the Christmas festivities,” Onoja said.
He explained that surveillance operations have also been scaled up, with increased aerial monitoring and intelligence gathering to track the movement and communication of suspected criminal and terrorist groups.
Onoja disclosed that commanders across all theatres of operation have been directed to strengthen patrols, mount reinforced checkpoints and deepen collaboration with community leaders, local vigilante groups and state security outfits to improve early warning and response.
Reaffirming the military’s commitment, he said the protection of lives and property remains the top priority of the Armed Forces.
“As we approach this festive period, every necessary measure is being taken to ensure that Nigerians celebrate Christmas in peace, unity and joy,” he added.
However, the defence spokesman emphasised that public cooperation is vital to the success of the ongoing operations. He urged Nigerians to remain calm but vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activity to the nearest security formation, assuring that all information received would be treated with urgency and confidentiality.
Onoja also conveyed the goodwill message of the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, who wished Nigerians a Merry Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year, while calling on citizens to support security agencies by adhering to security advisories throughout the festive season.
