Anthony Joshua survives road accident
World heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, was on Monday involved in a serious road accident at the Makun axis of Ogun State, an incident that claimed the lives of two people.
The crash occurred along the busy Lagos–Ibadan Expressway while Joshua and others were reportedly travelling from Lagos to Sagamu. According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), five adult males were involved in the accident.
In a statement and images shared from the scene, road safety officials confirmed that two of the occupants died, while two others “escaped unhurt.” Joshua, the FRSC said, was “rescued alive and sustained minor injuries” before being taken for “medical attention.”
An initial assessment by the FRSC revealed that the Lexus Jeep involved in the incident was suspected to have been travelling “beyond the legally prescribed speed limit.” Officials added that the vehicle lost control during “an overtaking manoeuvre” and subsequently rammed into a stationary truck parked by the roadside.

Confirming the incident, the Ogun State Government expressed deep sympathy to the families of the victims, describing the accident as tragic and deeply painful.
The state government disclosed that preliminary findings showed that two male foreign nationals died on the spot. Their remains have been deposited at the Livewell Morgue in Sagamu. Joshua and the driver of the vehicle were swiftly rescued by security personnel attached to his convoy and taken to a hospital, where they are currently receiving medical care.
The sport utility vehicle involved in the crash has since been evacuated to the Sagamu Motor Traffic Division (MTD) office. Authorities said arrangements were underway to tow the stationary truck to the same location to enable a thorough investigation.
Describing the incident as “deeply unfortunate,” the Ogun State Government lamented the loss of lives and noted that other victims sustained varying degrees of injuries and are receiving treatment.
Motorists were urged to exercise caution and strictly comply with traffic rules, particularly during the festive season when vehicular traffic is usually heavy. Road safety officials and security agencies were also called upon to intensify monitoring and enforcement across the state to protect lives and property.
“Our hearts go out to the bereaved families who lost their loved ones in this tragic incident, which the State considers a devastating loss,” the government said. “As we mourn collectively, we pray for the repose of the souls of the departed and for the speedy recovery of the injured. May Almighty God grant the families left behind the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”
